While we may aspire\nto a clutter-free house, are we really prepared to do what it takes to have\none?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To carry out a\nreally proper decluttering, you need to be ruthless. Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being decisive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Decluttering\ninvolves deciding to do one of three things with any particular item \u2013 bin it,\ngive it away or keep it. Reaching this decision should take no more than five\nminutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask yourself a\nseries of questions and consider your answers before deciding what to do with\nthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have I used it in\nthe last year?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This can be especially relevant for items<\/a> of clothing but works for lots of other stuff. Anything that hasn\u2019t been used in the last year is simply taking up space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does it still serve\na purpose?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Can you remember why\nyou bought the item in the first place? Is that still the reason why you are\nholding on to it, or has it outlived its purpose? If something isn\u2019t being used\nand has served its purpose, it\u2019s time to say goodbye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does it have\nsentimental value?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is where most\ndecluttering runs aground. Something may no longer be useful but may have a lot\nof sentimental value. However, you can still be ruthless here. If it evokes a\nmemory, then take a picture or write about it in a journal. Hold onto a few of\nthese types of items, but not too many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you have sorted\nout your clutter, you need to decide the fate of all your items. Here are your\noptions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bin it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Make sure you\ndispose of it properly. For smaller items that can be binned at home, dispose\nof them in the correct bin. Most materials can be recycled nowadays, and if\nyou\u2019re not sure, you can check online with your local authority. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For larger items,\ntake them along to your local amenity site, where you can dispose of general\nwaste, timber, metal and electrical good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give it away<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most charity shops\nwill accept donations of clothes, books, jewelry, toys and even small furniture\nitems. If you plan on bringing larger items for donations, you should phone\nahead to find out if they will take them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also\nvarious websites and Facebook pages where you can advertise items you are\ngiving away for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sell it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can sell\nhousehold items in good condition on Gumtree or eBay sites, while sites such as\nMusic Magpie will buy items such as DVDs, CDs, games, and small electronics\nsuch as phones or tablets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Could you keep it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
