Some people love spiders, while others don\u2019t. Some people\nare dog people, while others are cat people. There\u2019s a lot of animals that\ncause divisions and disputes among people. One animal that we\u2019re sure we can\nall agree upon as being too cute to hate is penguins. Right? Did you know that\non April 25th<\/sup> it\u2019s officially World Penguin Day? In honour of the\noccasion, we\u2019ve done a bit of research and found some truly fascinating facts\nabout everyone\u2019s favourite black and white flightless birds. Enjoy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Masters of Disguise?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Looking at penguins head on with their striking colours,\nyou\u2019d never really think of them as being masters of stealth camouflage and\ndisguise, would you? Well, the funny thing is that that\u2019s exactly what their\ncolourings are there for. You see, from above the black back of the penguin\nblends perfectly into the blackened and murky depths of the ocean. While, from\nbelow, its white belly makes it almost invisible against the bright surface of\nthe water. Amazing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Penguins Are\nSoutherners<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever been involved in one of those tired and boring\ndebates about which is best, north or south? We\u2019ve got the answer to the\nargument. When you factor in where all the penguins in the world, that\u2019s 17\ndifferent species, originate from, there can only be one winner. Penguins are\nin fact southerners as they\u2019re only found in the Southern Hemisphere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Happens to All\nthat Seawater?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve ever seen a penguin hunt for fish, you\u2019ll have\nnoticed that they seem to take a fair amount of seawater into their bodies.\nWhat happens to it though and why do they not have insane blood pressure? Well,\npenguins are equipped with a special gland found behind their eyes. Known as\nthe supraorbital gland. This gland helps to filter the saltwater from their\nbloodstream. It is excreted either by sneezing, gross, or through their beaks.\nSpitting?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three\u2019s a\nCrowd\u2026Unless You\u2019re a Penguin<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve all heard the phrase, two\u2019s company, three\u2019s a crowd.\nWhile that applies to humans, the same can\u2019t be said for penguins. Apart from\ntwo breeds of these glorious animals, penguins breed in huge colonies that\nconsist of as many as a thousand birds. There\u2019s really no privacy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time-saving Moulting<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most birds tend to lose and then replace a few of their\nfeathers at a time. Penguins, not wanting to be the same as all other birds,\nare different. They moult all their dead feathers at the same time. This\nhappens when they spend a good two to three weeks located solely on land, until\nthey\u2019ve undergone a process known, dramatically, as the catastrophic moult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty\u2019s Plenty,\nUnless You\u2019re a Gentoo Penguin<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It must be said that out of the water penguins look clumsy\nand quirky. In the water though, they turn into the masters of swimming. In\nfact, the fastest species of penguin is the Gentoo, that can achieve speeds as\nfast as 22mph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
